Mask Acne - “Maskne”
Causes, Preventative Measures, Best way to apply your makeup & Treatments
Is your mask causing “Maskne”?
Causes- The medical term for “maskne” is acne mechanica, a skin condition brought on by prolonged wear of facial coverings. Masks cause heat and friction on the skin and when combined with a moist environment from breathing, talking and sweating, pores get clogged and can become pimples or acne cysts. On top of that, the prolonged heat and sweat can cause the skin to become dry, itchy and raw.
Preventative Measures-
Wash fabric masks after every use, especially when wearing makeup! Try using a gentle detergent since your mask will be touching your face.
Use a new disposable mask after each use.
Be conscious of the type of face masks you are wearing. Try wearing masks made of natural, soft fabric (like organic cotton) and avoid masks of synthetic fabrics, these materials can irritate the skin. Bonus: We sell locally made, organic cotton face masks here at Salon Patrick!
Best Makeup Routine-
Be conscious of your makeup placement. When you can avoid wearing makeup under your mask, do so! This will avoid some of the congestion in your pores, focus your makeup on your eye and brows.
When you are applying makeup under your mask make sure your night time routine consists of a good clarifying face mask. We recommend Aveda’s Deep Cleansing Clay Masque.
Treatment/Skincare Routine-
Apply moisturizer after washing your face in the morning before putting your mask on. We recommend using Aveda’s All Sensitive Lotion. This will keep your skin nice and moisturized.
ALWAYS wash your face when taking your mask off for the day. We recommend using Aveda’s Outer Peace Foaming Cleanser to help fight your “maskne”.
Use a good exfoliant once or twice a week to decongest your pores. We recommend Aveda’s Radiant Skin Refiner.
