Spa Days With Vai: Protecting Your Skin While Traveling

“Summer is in full swing, meaning lots of people are preparing to travel for vacation or to visit family. Whatever your reason for your trip, here’s how to keep your skin happy as you go.

Don’t forget to pack (and use!) your sun protection gear: Sunscreen is crucial for every day of your vacation. This includes travel days because in an airplane, you’re even closer to the sun! Sun protection gear also includes hats or visors, sunglasses, and jackets to protect yourself from sun exposer at the beach, pool, on a hike, or wherever else your travel takes you.

Consider your environment: If you’re traveling by plane and/or going somewhere arid like the desert or mountains, don’t forget your hydrating products. Humidity on airplanes can actually drop 10%, leaving your skin looking dull and can make fine lines more prominent, so bring a hydrating mask or a great moisturizer with you. If you’re traveling somewhere humid, like the beach or a tropical paradise, try swapping your heavier creams for a lightweight, water-based gel moisturizer with you. If you have an oily complexion already, consider packing oil-blotting sheets to keep your face shine free!

Limit your indulgences and stick to a healthy diet: Fried foods and alcohol can lead to dehydration and inflammation in the body, which can wreak havoc on your complexion. Try not to overdo it on the sugary cocktails and fatty foods, and opt for hydrating foods and drinks like fruits, coconut water, or herbal teas instead.

Hands off: Weather you’re traveling by plane, car, or bus, or staying in a tent, hotel room, or condo. You’re sure to encounter some pretty germy places on your journey. So be mindful about what you’re touching and try not to transfer those germs to your face. Make sure you pack hand sanitizer or an antibacterial soap to keep yourself germ-free.

Skip the free toiletries at your hotel and use your own products: I love free products as much as any gal but hotel soaps and lotions are very high in fragrances and preservatives, which can be irritating and make you breakout. Don’t forget to pack your own skincare routine products to alleviate any sensitives from suddenly switching products.

Catch some good ZZZ’s: Even just 2 nights of bad sleep can make your skin look tired and dull. So replicate your own sleep routine while on the go to help yourself get a better nights’ rest. Travel with your own pillow, sleeping eye mask, pillow mist, or whatever else comforts you at the end of the day. Getting out of your at-home routine doesn’t have to be stressful on your skin. With these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy your trip without slipping into bad skincare habits. Enjoy your summer and safe travels! “ -Xoxo Vai
